Physics Education Division

Physics and Physics Education have an important role to play in today’s society, which to a large extent is based on technological developments derived from discoveries in science, many in physics. An increasing effort has been devoted to improving awareness in the general public, and especially among young people in schools, of the importance of natural science in everyday life.

The Physics Education division has the ambition to contribute to strengthening the perception of the physics discipline in society, contribute to bridging the gap between school teachers and scientists at the universities, and to support and strengthen physics teachers to maintain and improve the quality of physics teaching.

Objectives:

Education is a keystone in all activities of the European Physical Society (EPS). The Physics Education Division was created in the Spring of 2000. It deals with issues relating to pre-university and university education:

  • Teaching & learning of physics at all levels
  • Teacher education
  • In-service teacher training
  • Public understanding of Physics/Science
  • New trends in physics education
  • Implementation of the Bologna process
  • Differences in the European educational system in physics
  • EPS Position Papers
  • David Sands– (Chair), University of Hull, UK
